Have you ever noticed that the more you invest in something, the harder you work to see it through? Whether it’s a class, a relationship, or your own healing, making a meaningful commitment often shifts how you show up. It’s not just about money—it’s about energy, time, and intention. And often, that shift in effort begins the moment we decide something matters enough to care about deeply.
In my work at Crescent Counseling & Coaching, I’ve observed a consistent pattern: when people choose to show up for themselves—whether through therapy, coaching, or any intentional practice—they tend to engage more fully. And that deeper engagement often leads to more sustainable growth.
When we choose to invest—whether emotionally, financially, or with our time—we’re reinforcing that something is meaningful to us. That sense of meaning can drive motivation in powerful ways.
Psychologists Edward Deci and Richard Ryan, founders of Self-Determination Theory, explain that when people feel ownership over their choices and perceive those choices as aligned with personal values, they are more likely to remain engaged and motivated over time (Deci & Ryan, 2000; Ryan & Deci, 2017). Investment, then, isn’t about obligation—it’s about alignment. A signal to yourself: This matters.
If you’ve ever RSVP’d to a free event and skipped it last minute, you’re not alone. But if you paid for that same event, you likely felt more compelled to attend. Not necessarily because of the money, but because the act of committing created a sense of responsibility.
Recent research on effort justification supports this idea. When we invest in something, we tend to assign it more value—because our brain wants our effort to be “worth it” (Yang, Chen, & Zhuang, 2025). This isn’t about guilt—it’s about meaning-making. When we put energy into something, we tend to care about it more.
One of the most powerful effects of commitment is that it can shift our internal narrative. Not in a grand, motivational way—but in a slow, steady one. When we keep showing up, we begin to see ourselves as someone who shows up. And that self-concept matters.
Studies in counseling psychology have found that clients who feel a stronger sense of agency and collaboration in the therapeutic process tend to experience better outcomes (Güleç, 2024). When we take an active role in our healing—whether that means scheduling appointments, reflecting between sessions, or practicing new skills—we reinforce the belief that we are capable of change.
To be clear: meaningful investment doesn’t always mean financial. For some, it means carving out time each week to reflect. For others, it means setting boundaries around their healing. For many, it’s a mix of resources—emotional, physical, and yes, sometimes financial.
But across contexts, the act of choosing to care—to stay consistent with something that supports you—often deepens your relationship with it. And with yourself.
If you’re in a season of change, you don’t have to give everything at once. But consider what kind of energy or care you want to bring to it. Ask yourself: What am I willing to give to this part of my life? That question alone can start to open something.
In the end, it’s not about how much we give. It’s about what it means to us when we do.
